The 5 Best Free Websites for Learning about Self-Publishing

So, you want to self-publish? Personally, I think you’ve made a good choice. But to reap the benefits of self-publishing, you first need to put in the work. And to put in the work, you need to know what you’re doing.

Luckily, you’re not alone! There are millions of people who have gone before you—some who learned how to self-publish well, and others who learned from lots of mistakes and did the research later. They would all tell you that it’s far, far better to do the research first. But it can be difficult to learn about self-publishing when most websites are just vying for your attention so you’ll choose them to self-publish your book. That’s why I’ve compiled the top five best free websites for learning about self-publishing!

SelfPublishing.com

True to its name, selfpublishing.com covers everything self-publishing on its free blog. While it does offer paid services, it’s a great place to simply learn for free, and it does offer a few free resources as well. Personally, I don’t recommend their book Published., but as a comprehensive resource the website is pretty great, and their services have pretty good reviews, too, if you’re interested in them.

Reddit

Perhaps surprising on this list, but where better to learn directly from people’s experiences? The writing subreddit is a great place to learn, and this specific thread on self-publishing offers a lot of insight from various people living in various places (which is important because laws and processes vary by country!).

Reedsy

I’ve always enjoyed Reedsy’s helpful articles! Not only do they have a great writing blog, but they also offer several free courses you can have delivered to your email. They offer some paid services as well if you’re looking for them. This post on self-publishing is especially comprehensive and helpful!

Kindlepreneur

I can’t tell you how many times this site has saved me from making terrible mistakes with formatting, marketing, and all things KDP. Even if you’re not publishing through Amazon, Kindlepreneur is really helpful with figuring out the practical side of self-publishing: marketing, formatting, cover design, etc.

Various Blogs

This might be cheating a bit because this includes several websites, but it’s important to mention! Several authors and self-publishing experts have written extensively on how to self-publish. Some notable ones are Jane Friedman, David Gaughran, and Joanna Penn. Look around for these gems because they often have some of the best and most helpful info out there!

No matter where you want to learn about self-publishing, the important part is that you learn! Find your favourite sites and start studying—your readers (and your future self) will thank you for it later!

Unfortunately, good stories don’t sell by default. As an indie author, I have to do all my marketing myself! My first marketing goal will take care of advertising costs for my upcoming middle-grade book. I need your help to make it happen! Thank you in advance, and God bless you! ♥️ E.J.
