The Hallmarks of a Good Writing Spot

Sometimes, to get a good writing session in, you just need to get out of the house. Being in a different space can spark just the right kind of creativity, but it can also create enough distractions to detract from your focus. So how do you find the balance? How do you know if settling down at a coffee shop will do more harm than good?

Well, lucky you, the answer’s right here! As someone who lives in a big city, has travelled widely, and writes out and about all the time, I’ve been to some places that are incredible for my creativity. I’ve also been to places that I’ve promptly left because they just don’t cut it.

So, from my experiences, a list of all the things that make up a good writing space:

  • Not too crowded. A light bit of crowding is usually good stimulation for the brain. Too much, though, and it becomes distracting. One easy way to remove yourself from a crowded place is to shift to outside seating during the rush, then come back inside when it’s not so busy anymore.
  • Comfortable chairs. Might sound too specific, but if a place doesn’t have comfy chairs, you won’t be compelled to sit there for too long. (Trust me—I’ve been there!)
  • Tables at the right height. Weirdly enough, this is an important factor, too. If the table is too low or too high, it’ll be difficult for you to write comfortably. Don’t instantly head out the door if this is the case, though. Many places (especially coffee shops) have a variety of table and chair styles, so just try scooting over to another seat and see if that helps!
  • Music isn’t too loud. I’ve been to places where the music is so loud and obnoxious that even earbuds with your own music doesn’t help! That being said, try to grab a seat that’s not right under a speaker.
  • Enough room. Make sure you have enough room for everything: your computer/notebook, food, coffee, and all other writing materials. It’s no fun when you’re cramped!
  • Comfortable temperature. I’ve learned to always bring a sweater with me when I go to write somewhere because, nine times out of ten when living in Florida, indoor shops crank up the AC. But where you sit can influence the temperature, too; if you’re too cold, try moving away from the AC vent. If you’re too hot, try moving further into the place, away from the front door.
  • Coffee or tea. Writing is always better with these. 🙂

My favourite place to write absolutely hits all of these marks. It’s a little coffee shop that has a cosy seating area which is never crowded. The music is soft and pleasant, so most time I don’t even need earbuds. The tables are spacious and at the exact right height for both handwriting and typing, and moreover, I’ve never felt too hot or too cold while sitting there. And a bonus: their coffee is delicious!

A place like this where you feel comfortable, focused, and creative, is invaluable. If you haven’t already discovered your “writing safe haven,” it’s time to go on the hunt! And make sure to take this post with you as your guide.

What’s your favourite place to write? What makes it so special? Let me know in the comments! And as always…

Happy writing!

Unfortunately, good stories don’t sell by default. As an indie author, I have to do all my marketing myself! My first marketing goal will take care of advertising costs for my upcoming middle-grade book. I need your help to make it happen! Thank you in advance, and God bless you! ♥️ E.J.
