You Need to Get Out of the House—Here’s Why

What a haven of rest and security is one’s own room!

Margaret Wolfe Hungerford

This may be true, and it’s the reason why we enjoy being home so much. It’s safe. We know it inside and out. We have control over what happens there.

But sitting in your house all day isn’t conducive to good writing.

Experiences Enhance Creativity

A year ago, I wrote about the importance of getting out and about. It invites you to enjoy new experiences, encourages creativity and focus, and, in essence, gives you things to write about! How can we write about a characters’ experiences if we don’t experience the world for ourselves first?

Writing Retreats Increase Focus

Did you know that a writing retreat can be just an afternoon out at a coffee shop focusing on a single writing task? You can also “DIY” your own writing retreat on a budget; all it takes is a free weekend and some planning!

Writing retreats are proven to just help us get stuff done, but it doesn’t have to be some massive month-long retreat in the wilderness that costs thousands of dollars. You can retreat today!

Finding the Right Spot Is Crucial

Once you’re out and about in the world, finding the right place to write is an important part of the process. If you sit somewhere noisy and distracting, you probably won’t get very much done. But once you know the hallmarks of a good writing spot, you can settle down, focus, and write something amazing!

Don’t Doubt Yourself—Get Out There!

So many things can keep you home. Chores, pets, meals, family, what have you. They’re legitimate excuses, but they’re not good enough reasons for you to stay cooped up 24/7. Make an effort to get outside, drink in new experiences, and write all the better for it.

What’s been your experience with getting out of the house to write? Do you have a favourite place you retreat to? I’d love to hear about it!

Happy writing!
