Who doesn’t want to go on a writing retreat?
I happened to come across two great posts taking a nuanced view on writing retreats. The first, by Ann Byle, talks more about the benefits of taking a writing retreat. The second from writer sisters Amber and Ashley on Vocal is all about how you can “DIY” a writing retreat:
Have you ever thought about going on a fancy writing retreat in some far-off place, only to realize you can’t afford the cost or the time off from work? We always thought a writing retreat just wasn’t going to be possible for us. . . until we stumbled across the DIY writing retreat idea. . .
DIY-ing a Writing Retreat
My favourite thing about both of these posts is they agree that 1) writing retreats are important and 2) it’s possible to do them on a budget! There are many reasons why it’s good to get away to write. Speaking from experience, it helps me focus and get way more done. As someone who writes for work and fun, I get away for a day or an afternoon at least once a week—and I don’t know what I’d do without it!
But even if you can’t do that, taking a weekend or even just a day off work to go out and write can be incredibly beneficial. Do some exploring, grab a nice warm drink, and then settle down in a good writing spot to get started.
I hope you enjoy these posts—and I can’t wait to hear about your writing retreats!
Happy writing!
