Are you a freelance writer looking to grow your business and expand your reach? (Who of us isn’t?!) I’ve got a simple, often overlooked solution for you: self-publishing. Now, I know what you might be thinking: “I can’t write a book!” or maybe something like “Books have nothing to do with my business.”
I’m here to tell you that no matter what kind of writing work you do, writing and publishing a book can help boost your business and build your brand. Here’s how!
1. Establish Expertise
It’s one thing to say you’re an expert and another to show it. Writing a book in your field of expertise shows that you really know your stuff—and it will make you stand out to potential clients.
2. Visibility
Through the promotion of your book, you’ll get your name out there in the world and attract people to both your business and your book. It’s a great way to market yourself and your business! If you do it right, traffic from your book will inevitably flow to your website, blog, etc. and bring in more quality clients.
3. Develop New Skills
Maybe you haven’t written a book before and you’re not sure how. It’s never too late to learn! Do some research (this blog is a great place to start!) and seek some help if you need to—as a book coach, I can guide you through the process of writing and polishing your own book whether you’re full of ideas or have no clue where to start. And the publishing company I’m a part of, Flying Wings, can take your book from idea to published!
Even if you get the help of a professional, when you write a book, you develop new skills that you can use to improve your business—and maybe you’ll even write another book in the future!
4. Passive Income
If your book does well, you can generate some passive income from the royalties! It’s always nice to have money coming in without doing a single thing; just make sure to invest your time and money into making a quality book!
But What Do I Write?
Are you an editor? Write a book for writers on how to self-edit their work. Copywriter? Write a book on the elements of good copy. Fiction writer? Write a novel or a how-to book on how to write a novel. Write about whatever you’re passionate about in your business! A good place to start is to think about why you started freelance writing in the first place.
As a freelance writer, you should always be exploring options to make your business better, and since you’re already a writer, self-publishing might be the next right step! Don’t let fear stop you—take your time, get some pro guidance, and establish yourself in your field.
Remember, if you have a question big or small about freelance writing or self-publishing, leave a comment or contact me!
Happy writing!

Unfortunately, good stories don’t sell by default. As an indie author, I have to do all my marketing myself! My first marketing goal will take care of advertising costs for my upcoming middle-grade book. I need your help to make it happen! Thank you in advance, and God bless you! ♥️ E.J.
