Good Adaptation Practices from Pride & Prejudice

There’s certainly been a theme of adaptations on the blog recently. Maybe it’s because my current WIP is an adaptation… Just maybe…

Anyway, in looking through everything I have on adaptations, I came across my post on Pride & Prejudice (2005) from two years ago. It’s one of the first in-depth reviews I ever did on the blog, and I think it has some great points about why this movie succeeds even though it doesn’t follow the book word for word.

As writers, it’s so important for us to realise the significance of a story’s purpose, especially when we dive into adaptations. Though we may add some unique themes and characters and give the story our own flair, one thing I don’t believe we should ever do is use a good story or character written by someone else for a point that the author would have never agreed with. Maintaining the heart of the story is so important, or even improving on the message when the story calls for it (as I did with “The Brave Little Tailor.”)

This is why things like the recent “Winnie the Pooh movie” that we shall not speak of saddens me so much. The usage of such a comforting, wholesome character for something so contrary shows no respect for A.A. Milne and the vision he had for his stories. It’s not funny when it’s violating someone’s pure intentions to such an extreme.

So let’s take care of the stories we write, whether they’re entirely our own creations or unique adaptations. This post will show you how, whether you’ve seen Pride & Prejudice or not!

Happy writing!

When you write as much as I do, you have to take frequent breaks from sitting. A standing desk (not a whole desk, but a mini desk that will sit on top of my current desk with my laptop, keyboard, and mouse and extend upward) will allow me to continue working while maintaining that good blood flow to my brain. Thank you so much for your support that allows me to keep producing free content. God bless you! ♥️ E.J.
